If you are living in a rain-prone area, you might be having a water-resistant or waterproof jacket. It might also get dirty with the continuous dirt and debris that comes over it and you should instantly remove that dirt off your waterproof jacket. Because that dirt and debris is responsible for the wetting off of your jacket.
Dirt and debris when not removed from the jacket, start to damage the waterproof fabric and the coating that is used on your waterproof clothing. So the best thing would be to wash it properly. If you don’t want to wash out your jackets frequently, then you can get yourself wax jackets that are made of water repellent fabric and don’t need to be washed. Here we are presenting some of the tried steps you could follow to wash your waterproof clothing without doing any damage to it.
Identify if There is a Need to Wash
Washing your waterproof clothing frequently is not a good practice because it damages the quality of the clothing. So better you should first identify if there is a need to wash. If there is simple mud and dirt, you can remove it using the brush. But if there is a problem of wetting out, then it needs to be washed.
Preparing Your Waterproof Jackets
Now that you have identified that your jacket needs a wash, you should prepare for it. First of all, you should remove the dirt and debris off it and then do the zip ups and fasten the straps if any. Remove everything from the pockets. And also remove any removable if any, you can wash them separately.
Make sure that there is no washing powder left over in the machine because an ordinary detergent can harm the waterproof coating. Use detergents like NikiWax for washing waterproof clothing. You can also check the washing instruction of the product given on the package.
Washing Your Waterproof Jackets
Now that you are prepared for washing your jacket, add water and detergent to the machine. It is suggested to decrease down the temperature to 30°C. Now run the machine on a slow spin for better washing of the jacket.
Once the spin is finished you can have a dry spin because it will soak the moisture of the jacket. Now when you are done hang your jacket in a cool and dry place. Don’t hang it in open sunshine which can damage the coating of the jacket.
Checking the Washed Clothing
Since you have washed your waterproof jacket, now you need to check if there is anything left to do. If there is some place that you find, where the waterproof coating is wearing off, you should get it reproofed by yourself or send it to some reproofing shops.
